According to the National Institute of Health, there is a huge need for physician practitioners to adopt systematic approaches to maximize smoking cessation.  NIH article


Physicians can recommend and offer this program to patients to optimize their desire and ability to quit the use of tobacco products. 
ABOUT THIS EXCITING PROGRAM

Proactive Primary Care Services, Inc group smoking cessation program was designed by doctor of occupational therapy, Vanessa M. Dazio, OTD, OTR/L. She has incorporated the use of six health behavior models in this excellent program.

The DAZIO comprehensive smoking cessation program uses patient self- assessment, personal observation, group discussion, group interactions and group dynamics, partnering and mind-body interventions including hypnotic conditioning, visualization/guided imagery and relaxation techniques to reduce then eliminate the desire to smoke or use tobacco products.

ABOUT THE SESSIONS
  • During the first session, the participant is asked to formally identify his/her level of commitment to change. Conversations, interactions and processes are controlled using group dynamics to optimize awareness of current health and coping skills, re-frame thinking and anchor the desire to quit. 
  • Participants are then given a “pre-hypnosis self- study activity that includes the use of and a smoking diary activity to do at home for two days. The diary is done to enable the participant to identify habits/routine, personal actions and physical reactions when smoking.
  • Proceeding two sessions use group discussion/group dynamics to highlight participants insights, re-address commitment to change; re-frame thoughts to support the commitment to change habits and lifestyle; group discussion to enable conversation about how to implement routine change; and then mind-body techniques incorporating the use of breathing techniques, relaxation training, visual imagery, focused concentration to more firmly anchor in the desire and ability to quit the use of tobacco products.

PROGRAM GOALS
  • Increase participant’s understanding of the personal effects of tobacco on his/her body
  • Maximize the participant’s commitment to smoking cessation
  • Increase ability to cope with addictive response to tobacco products
  • Eliminate desire to smoke or use tobacco products
  • Change lifestyle to incorporate different routines that forego the use of tobacco

  • Wellness Model: Conscious and deliberate process that increases awareness of health and wellness to make more choices for a satisfying lifestyle.
